What it is like to have Impressions at-home invisible aligners

You just received a package in the mail. 

It’s from Impressions! 

Now what?

Impressions is a local (to WNC) orthodontic treatment option. This at-home clear aligner process provides safe, professional and effective teeth-straightening for busy professionals or parents, without the hassle of regular in-office appointments. Impressions is supervised by board certified, nationally-recognized orthodontics, created by Invisalign and shipped right to your door! 

Once you’ve come for your initial, free consultation, your Impressions kit – with everything you need to straighten your smile – will be mailed right to your door. Then what’s next? 

A day in the life of an Impressions patient: 

During Impressions treatment, you’ll wear your aligners while you sleep. It’s recommended that you wear your aligners for 22 hours each day for the best and quickest results. Upon waking up, remove your aligners to brush and floss. This is also a good time to clean your aligners too. You can do this by brushing your aligners with your toothbrush and non-whitening toothpaste, by soaking them in cleaning solution (Invisalign cleaning crystals dissolved in water), or in a mixture of peroxide and water. 

While your aligners are out, this is a great time to have your morning coffee or breakfast. You’ll brush your teeth again afterwards – brushing your teeth after eating or drinking anything other than water is an important part of oral hygiene during treatment. 

Next, you’ll wear your aligners until lunch time. No one will know! When it’s time to eat again, remove your aligners and put them in their case. This protects your Impressions aligners and also prevents them from being thrown out with any food waste or trash. Before reinserting your aligners, you’ll need to brush and floss again. 

You’ll go about your business until dinner time, when you’ll repeat the tray removal, eating and brushing process before returning your aligners to their home in your mouth. 

Before bed, you’ll remove your aligners once more to brush and floss. Then you’ll sleep the night away while your smile is getting straightened! 

During your Impressions treatment, which lasts an average or six to eight months, you’ll trade out your aligners for a new set on a weekly basis. We recommend setting a reminder on your phone. Aside from the additional brushing and flossing, the tray changes on a weekly basis and your consultation at the start of treatment, life with Impressions is pretty normal. That seems like something to smile about!

Asheville Orthodontist, Dr. Roberts, created his own at-home teeth-straightening kit

Dr. T. Luke Roberts, D.M.D., M.S.D., founder and leader of the Blue Ridge Orthodontics practice located in Asheville, Brevard, and Hendersonville, has been on a journey of smiles for quite a number of years.

“Having grown up in a medical family who spent our summers working on medical missions, I knew that I wanted to work in a field that has a positive impact on the lives of others. Because of my exposure to patients with cleft lip and palate during those medical missions, I was drawn to the phenomenal change that improving the smile can have on people,” says Dr. Roberts. “I once participated in the cleft lip repair of a 68-year-old woman in the Dominican Republic — and the happiness and gratitude that she showed when we were finished has stuck with me since that day. I chose orthodontics because I knew I would be able to create that positive change in self-image for people every day.”

Seeing how his patients’ smiles change for the better is a daily joy for Dr. Roberts.

As the owner of Blue Ridge Orthodontics, devoted husband, and active father to his children, Quinn, Emma, and Charlie, Dr. Roberts understands the struggle of not being able to find extra time in your day. Having a great smile has been proven to boost self-esteem and confidence in social settings.

I love seeing the transformation that happens when they move through the different stages of orthodontic treatment, and my favorite moment is when they get their braces off! When he’s not busy creating new smiles at BRO, Dr. Roberts is a devoted music fan and plays the guitar, banjo, and mandolin. He and his wife, Beth, live in Asheville with their children Quinn, Emma, and Charlie. The entire family loves global food and are avid cooks.

Dr. Megan SchulerMegan G. Schuler, D.M.D., M.S.D.

Dr. Megan G. Schuler wanted to be an orthodontist since she herself had braces. She had insecurities around her teeth and smile. Orthodontic treatment was the thing that made her feel more confident! She became comfortable with her new smile and realized the difference that straight teeth could make in someone’s life. After her treatment, Dr. Schuler decided that she wanted to help give people the smiles that they always hoped for, so they could face the world proudly.

“Straightening my teeth completely changed my attitude and gave me confidence,” says Schuler.

When she’s not transforming people’s smiles, Dr. Schuler also enjoys hiking, camping, yoga, reading, traveling, trying new restaurants. Spending time with her husband, Brendan, and dog, Boone is her idea of peace.

Dr. Jackson GriffethDr. Jackson Griffeth, D.M.D., M.S.D.

Jackson Griffeth, our newest addition to the Impressions team. Growing up in a family of healthcare workers, it was natural for Dr. Griffeth to want to work with people. All it took was a day of shadowing an orthodontist and he was hooked! Dr. Griffeth drives to create an excellent patient experience and join the uplifting team culture of the BRO team.

“My decision to pursue orthodontics is founded on the desire to make a positive physical and emotional impact on members of my community,” says Griffeth.

Dr. Griffeth has had some very exciting life experiences including competing in the TV show American Ninja Warrior! With his warm personality and excitement for experiences, Dr. G is able to lighten the mood and instantly put you at ease.

Cleaning your aligners, however, can be a bit of a pain, especially if you’re unsure how to do it properly. If you have purchased invisible aligners to correct your smile, you’ve made a big investment and we want to make sure you know how to keep them clean and clear!

 

Just like brushing and flossing your teeth, cleaning your aligners is essential to maintaining the health of your mouth. Depending on your diet, you’ll want to make sure that you are cleaning your aligners regularly to keep them clear. Without the proper cleaning regimen, your aligners may become cloudy from food and plaque residue.

Here are 4 ways to clean your invisible aligners:

  1. Clean aligners with non-whitening toothpaste.
  2. Soak aligners in hydrogen peroxide and water mixture.
  3. Soak aligners in a clear retainer cleaner solution.
  4. Use cleaning crystals to remove plaque from your invisible aligners.

(Please note: These tips suggest using warm water when cleaning your aligners, but you should never clean with hot water.)

1) Non-Whitening ToothpasteNon-whitening Toothpaste

Probably the easiest way to clean your aligners is just by using some toothpaste and a toothbrush. Use warm water, a gentle toothpaste (one formulated for children or sensitive teeth can work well), and a soft toothbrush to brush your aligners gently.

You do want to make sure that you’re using a more gentle, non-whitening toothpaste formula. Whitening toothpaste can have abrasive ingredients that will scratch your aligners, making it easier for bacteria and other germs to stick around.

2) PeroxideSoak aligners in hydrogen peroxide and water mixture.

The same properties in hydrogen peroxide that make it a good disinfectant also make it good for cleaning your aligners.

Combine equal parts hydrogen peroxide to warm water, stirring completely. Add invisible aligners to the mixture and allow them to soak for 30 minutes before removing them and rinsing them with cool water.

3) Retainer Cleaner

Soak aligners in clear retainer cleaning solution.

Retainer cleaner is a convenient option for easy cleaning that is available to order online. Retainer Brite cleaning tablets are a great option.

Add a single tablet to a cup of warm water, dissolving it into the water thoroughly. After stirring, soak invisible aligners into the solution for 15-20 minutes before rinsing.

4) Cleaning CrystalsUse cleaning crystals to remove plaque from your invisible aligners.

Cleaning crystals were specially designed by Invisalign to remove plaque, keeping aligners clean, hygienic and odor-free. Though more expensive than all the other options一a pack of 50 cleaning crystals costs $50一crystals are a reliable way to keep your aligners clean.

Dissolve a single pack into a cup of warm water, stirring until the crystals and water have formed a solution. Soak aligners into the solution for 15 minutes before rinsing them in cool water thoroughly.

Key Tips

Remember to always use warm water to make a soaking solution–anything too hot may warp the shape of your aligners and cost you big bucks to fix. If you’re unsure whether or not the temperature of your water is suitable, stick the tip of your finger in to test it.

After you’ve soaked your aligners, rinse them thoroughly with cool water to wash away any leftover solution. Getting a mouthful of watered-down hydrogen peroxide isn’t going to taste very good!

It’s best to only wear your aligners when your teeth are clean and free of food. Do what you can to brush and floss your teeth before inserting your aligners. Be prepared by packing yourself a travel cleaning kit including a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and mouthwash that you can bring with you everywhere. This will keep both your teeth and your aligners healthy and free of bad odors or problematic germs.

While it’s good to give your aligners a thorough clean every week or so, on occasion you can use mouthwash to kill a bit of bacteria and give your aligners a fresh taste. Dilute mouthwash with warm water and soak aligners briefly for a quick rinse.

From Self-Conscious to Confidently Smiling with Clear Aligners

We’ve all been teased. Some would say it’s a right of passage in junior high and high school. But I can still remember how mean teenagers can be. It doesn’t feel like a right of passage – more like torture. 

I mostly got called a nerd. Second in the running was “Jolly Green Giant” because I towered over most of my friends and peers right up until graduation. I also occasionally got picked on because my one front tooth edged out just a little ahead of the others, like it was trying to win a race. It was only one tooth, but that was all it took for the other hormonal high schoolers to make me feel like an outcast. 

I didn’t mind being called a nerd, because I liked being smart. I didn’t mind being singled out for being close to six feet tall, because it made me better at sports. What I didn’t like was the one bucktooth. That was something that could have been changed. I could have had a set of braces slapped on my teeth, like so many of my peers, and then come out the other side with teeth lined up like soldiers in a regiment. But, I didn’t get braces. 

“We can’t afford that,” my parents said. I said that was okay, even though it didn’t feel okay. After that, when I opened and closed my mouth I could feel that delinquent tooth rubbing just slightly more against the inside of my mouth – a reminder that I didn’t have a straight smile like my friends, or even the bullies. It was also a reminder that my parents didn’t have 5k or more to fix my teeth. 

I smiled less at graduation because of that tooth. I smiled less at my friends, family and new acquaintances. I smiled less when I got my first job. All because of that one tooth. 

Ten years later, I finally decided to straighten my teeth. I was pretty dang sick of talking out of one side of my mouth – the side of my mouth where my teeth looked perfectly normal – and was tired of the weird face I made in pictures. 

“Your teeth are pretty straight. Have you had braces before?” Dr. Roberts asked me.

I was shocked. No, I hadn’t had braces before. Couldn’t he see that one tooth that was sticking way out in front of all the others? Couldn’t he see that it had caused kids to pick on me?

No, he couldn’t see the insecurities that the one little tooth had caused my whole life, but he listened when I told him. He also listened when I told him I didn’t want braces because, while braces may have been acceptable in high school, I didn’t want them as an adult. 

I embarked on my new smile journey. The clear aligners straightened my teeth right up. In 14 months, that tooth was back in line where he was supposed to be. No one was going to pick on me about my smile ever again. 

Impressions Before After

When I finished my treatment and looked at the before and after photos, I couldn’t believe what I saw. Looking back, I could see that my tooth wasn’t actually that far out of line and that my smile wasn’t actually that crooked. I guess to me it had felt like it was really crooked because I harbored so much insecurity about it. Had I needed clear aligners at all? Then, I realized something. Confidence gives you a whole new perspective. Once I had a straight, beautiful smile that I wasn’t insecure about anymore, I couldn’t imagine tolerating anyone picking on me for one tooth. I was so comfortable with my teeth that I almost couldn’t imagine a time when I was uncomfortable. 

I think that’s the power of truly feeling good about yourself, and that’s why orthodontic treatment – like Impressions – is so important. Having insecurities and being self-conscious are real things. Whether you have one tooth out of line, or a whole mouth of crooked teeth, the effect of feeling insecure about your smile can do the same damage. From a medical standpoint did I really need my teeth straightened? No. From a self-confidence perspective did I need my teeth straightened? Absolutely.
