Hi guys! I have been on a journey for a few months straightening my teeth with Impressions’s clear aligners. I have been so extremely happy with my experience that I wanted to share a little about it. I’m an Asheville based wedding photographer who has a serious itch for travel. Smiles are a big part of my job. I’d been curious about how I could straighten my smile without wearing metal braces and without having constant appointments in one location. I’ve just returned from a two month trip in Asia, and let me tell you, Impressions has made both those things possible!
I never had braces as a kid, simply because my parents couldn’t afford it. But, I saw my friends with braces and watched them struggle to take care of them. I listened to them when they complained that the whole experience was painful and annoying. So, having less than perfect teeth actually never bothered me growing up. I didn’t have any desire to be a part of the metal mouth club.
As I got older, I started becoming more aware of the situation I had going on inside my mouth. I was not super happy with my smile or showing my teeth in photographs. I was dealing with a major overbite, some crooked bottom teeth, and my two front teeth were pushed really far forward. I hated seeing photographs of myself and avoided pictures all together.
In my early twenties, after having my own income for a few years, I decided I wanted to do something about my crooked teeth. I made an appointment with an orthodontics office in my hometown in Bay City, Michigan. I did not have the greatest experience with them. I was told that with the way my teeth were, if I wanted to straighten them out my entire midline would have to shift leaving me with an uncentered midline. An uncentered midline did not sit well with me. If I was going to commit to something like this and pay for it myself, I wanted my teeth to be perfect. I left the orthodontics that day feeling uncomfortable and defeated.
The price was also not very affordable for me at that time in my life and the amount of appointments I would have to make during the treatment didn’t work with my busy schedule and all the traveling I was doing for my business.
I decided to opt out of straightening my teeth in Michigan and chose to deal with hiding my smile from people. I spent many years doing this, smiling with my mouth closed, immediately deleting pictures that caught me with my mouth wide open and belly laughing.
Fast forward to being 29 years old. I own my own wedding photography business. My career is based around documenting people smiling. I encourage my clients to let loose and be themselves; laugh hard. It is hard to ask someone I barely know to smile when I myself have struggled with it most of my life. In addition to that, I am constantly meeting new people and new clients. I was not feeling very confident with fully smiling and showing my teeth during meetings or photoshoots. Hiding my teeth was always something that, over time, became natural, like walking or breathing. It is very, very exhausting to have to deal with something so intimate as hiding your smile on a regular basis. I decided to look into doing something about it, yet again.
I heard about @impressionsmile through one of my friends and decided to make the call to see what my options were. I had to go in for my first appointment in the beginning of the new year and to be honest, I was a little nervous to start the whole process over again or to hear that I wasn’t ever going to be able to have a pretty smile. I first set up a consultation appointment online, to be sure I was a good candidate for Impressions. I mentioned my orthodontics experience a few years back to Dr. Roberts and told him my fear of an uncentered midline. He told me this would not be the case and I would be a great candidate for their Impressions treatment program and that my midline would in fact be centered. Hearing this news was a weight lifted off my shoulders. When I went in for my appointment, right when I arrived I was greeted by a really warm and welcoming staff. I immediately felt really comfortable and excited to start this straight teeth journey.
During my appointment, my teeth were scanned with an awesome 3D scanner; no more goopy impressions that taste horrible. This scanning process was very simple and only took a few minutes. I felt as if I had been in the orthodontics office for all of twenty or thirty minutes. It was an absolute breeze.
A few weeks after my appointment, my treatment trays were shipped to my house in a cute, little box. Inside the box, there was a really helpful guide explaining what to do and some tips to take care of your Impressions trays. I felt like the package was very thoughtful. Each tray is labeled in the order of use, and I got all 27 of them delivered right to my door. I was excited about getting all of them at once because I was planning an extended backpacking trip to Asia and knew I would not be able to keep up with going into the office for appointments to get new trays.
After a few weeks into using my trays, I was already beginning to notice some big differences in my teeth.
When I was packing my things to go on my recent trip to Asia, I had to be really mindful about what I brought with me. My pack had to be light and comfortable, yet hold everything I would need for two months abroad. The trays packed nicely and lightly into my backpack. I was really happy about that, as it was one less thing to worry about. During the trip we were constantly moving around from place to place, and I found that it was super easy to switch out trays and keep up with my treatment on the go.
I am now almost seven months into the treatment, and my friends are noticing my much straighter teeth. I have never really been a person who takes many selfies or photos smiling but let me tell you, I am becoming that person with no shame! I can’t even begin to tell you how much more confidence I have when I am smiling and meeting new people. I am only halfway done with my treatment and I have gained all this extra self love so fast. It feels so very good!
Oh and you should know that the trays are also so very comfortable to wear for 22 hours a day and I have found that nobody really notices that I have them in. I was worried about people seeing them or my teeth looking like they were covered in plastic. This was absolutely not the case. It is also so easy to discreetly take them in and out on dinner dates with my partner or when grabbing coffee with a client.

Got to love that name right? Yes, these are technically still braces, but people won’t be able to tell that you have them in your mouth. that’s because incognito hidden braces are attached to the back side of the teeth. this keeps them completely hidden when you’re smiling or talking to someone. if you ask an orthodontist, then they may call these lingual braces. You would need to schedule an appointment with an orthodontist and please note that lingual braces are customized for each patient’s mouth.
If you are self-conscious about the prospect of wearing traditional metal braces, an incognito hidden braces are legitimate option to consider. however, lingual braces tend to be more expensive than traditional metal braces in North Carolina. If that’s a concern, then you may want to consider one of these other alternatives to braces.
Retainers
Most people would receive a retainer after you completed treatment with traditional metal braces. However, adults who only need minimum teeth correction may be able to achieve those desired results with a retainer alone. As far as aesthetics go, an Essix retainer is transparent and fits over the entire arch of the mouth. This makes it much less noticeable than traditional braces. this type of orthodontic appliance is also significantly less expensive than braces.
This may sound like an appealing option if you are seeking an alternative to braces, but remember we said this may work only if minimum teeth correction is required. The reality is that the number of use cases where this approach would be viable are extremely limited. If you truly want to straighten your teeth without braces, then you should consider a different alternative.
Headgear
This type of orthodontic appliance was traditionally used to correct extreme overbites. Headgear puts pressure on the upper teeth in jaw. Depending on what’s needed, the headgear will either be used to hold teeth in a particular position or to move them into proper alignment. Since headgear can be removed, it must be worn for a specific number of hours each day in order to achieve the desired results. Your orthodontist would provide specific instructions about this.
Headgear may be a viable way to straighten teeth without braces, but we haven’t talked to too many adults in Asheville that are excited about this alternative. We’d be lying if we said that wearing headgear would be less noticeable than traditional metal braces. Let’s continue to look at some other viable alternatives.
Dental Veneers
Cosmetic dentistry also offers another alternative for correcting one’s smile without the need for braces. Specifically were talking about porcelain veneers or dental bonding. if you don’t want braces, then these are a viable option to consider in North Carolina. Veneers are thin, hard shells of porcelain that are bonded permanently to the front of a tooth. You could use them to correct teeth that are crooked, discolored, misaligned, chipped or have spacing issues. Dental veneers are very strong and very resistant to staining.
If you’re looking for an alternative to braces that will provide results in a short amount of time, dental veneers are a viable option. That being said, they are pretty extreme and here’s why. First, veneers are permanent. A dentist will remove the surface enamel in order to attach the veneer to the tooth. It’s an irreversible procedure and veneers will need to be replaced every five to 10 years. We would still recommend looking into a different option if you want to straighten your teeth without braces.
Invisalign
Here’s a very popular option for adults who are in need of orthodontic treatment in North Carolina. If you are not familiar with Invisalign, these are clear plastic retainers that are used to straighten teeth without braces. They are custom made for the patient and work relatively quickly compared to traditional forms of orthodontic treatment. Also, Invisalign is essentially invisible and people won’t even know that you’re wearing them.
For Invisalign, your dentist or orthodontist will take a 3D map of your mouth at the beginning of your treatment. Then a series of aligners will be created based on the 3D map. Aligners are worn for approximately 20 to 22 hours per day and can be removed to eat and brush teeth. Aligners are switched out every two weeks for the next aligner in your series. It is this process that gently moves the teeth into correct alignment.
Invisalign is obviously a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a way to straighten your teeth without braces. They are so discreet that your friends won’t be able to tell you’re wearing them while you speak, laugh or smile. However, this form of orthodontic treatment still requires occasional checkups at the orthodontist and Invisalign can be even more expensive than traditional braces.

How Impressions Works to Straighten Your Teeth at Home
First, you need to schedule an appointment at one of our ImpressionsHubs. Currently, we are located in Asheville and Hendersonville, but stay tuned for new locations in the near future.
During this appointment, you’ll receive a free consultation to see if Impressions is right for you. Our orthodontist will examine your teeth and noting if you suffer from one of the issues that Impressions is capable of fixing, including:
Crowding
Overbites
Underbites
Spacing issues
If you do qualify for Impressions aligners, a digital scan is completed that very same day using the iTero 3D Digital Scanner, the same technology used by Invisalign.
With the 3D digital scan in hand, Impressions orthodontists will go about producing a plan of treatment for the patient. This plan is shared with the patient and each step gone over in detail so that they understand what is required of them and what must be done to achieve the smile of their dreams. Next, a series of invisible aligners will be produced and shipped out to the patient’s own front door in a matter of weeks.
Straightening Your Teeth At Home Without Braces
Compared to braces, there are some specific things to keep in mind with these at-home invisible aligners. First, remember that this treatment will not produce the results you want unless you wear your aligners for at least 20 hours a day. You’ll also need to monitor your diet and keep your Impressions aligners clean.

Important Details About Impressions Invisible Aligners
So, with all that in mind, let’s discuss the cost of treatment. Invisalign usually costs around $6,800, with insurance able to cover only $500-$1,000. Impressions costs half as much and your insurance will still cover the same amount.
Another great part? Impressions treatment is completed in six to nine months on average. That means that you will have a lot more time to enjoy life and eat/drink whatever you want whenever you want than is possible with either braces or Invisalign. Invisible aligners may not be for everyone, but for many adults in Western North Carolina, it’s an amazing option!

If you’re someone who spends any time on social media, possibly following a style influencer or former contestant on a top reality show, then you will be familiar with at-home teeth straighteners. They are just the latest in top beauty and health fads to sweep the nation, but unlike those jade rollers (what exactly do they do anyway?), at-home teeth straighteners have the potential to change your life in a drastic and noticeable way.
When deciding what kind of orthodontic treatment you want to choose, you need to consider exactly what you need to change. While the before and after photos of at-home straightening patients are impressive, the trays are really meant for the cosmetic enhancement of your smile. Those wanting more comprehensive orthodontic treatment will want to see an orthodontist about braces or Invisalign. Once you have that figured out, you can ask yourself what you’ll do with all your extra free time.
One of the most appealing aspects of at-home straightening is that it works quickly. On average, Impressions only takes six to nine months to correct a patient’s teeth. This is in large part because Impressions and other at-home straightening kits aren’t meant to address severe orthodontic issues. That’s when you’d want to talk to an orthodontist.
Fewer In-Office Visits
There is a lot you should know before getting aligners, but an essential part of this business model is that most of the orthodontic correction is done at home. Because of this, there isn’t much need to go into an actual office. This can be good or bad, depending on the person. This allows for one of our orthodontic specialists to take a more complete scan of your teeth using one of our 3D digital iTero scanner, the same technology used at the start of Invisalign. After the scan, a kit will be sent out to your house within 6 weeks containing your first set of aligners and a complimentary teeth-whitener.
Not every at-home aligner is made the same. Some companies send out a mold for you to use at home to make the tray. This method requires no actual in-office visits, but it can also open you up to a bad first impression, and that is not the way to start this treatment.
Who Should Consider At Home Teeth Straightening?
At-home aligners are ideal for someone who wants a fast, comfortable, convenient method of correcting their smile, especially the social teeth, or the front three teeth of your top and bottom rows. This style of straightening is great for professionals and other adults because it does not require you to wear noticeable braces. Braces can indirectly affect your performance in school or at work by preventing you from feeling confident in what you’re doing.
Other requirements exist to qualify for at-home straighteners. Mild to moderate tooth crowding or spacing is about the level that most at-home aligners work for. You also must have visited the dentist within the last 6 months to ensure that you do not have active gum disease, tooth decay, jaw issues, or loose teeth.
Who Doesn’t Qualify?
The first and most distinct disqualification for at-home aligners is that your case may be too severe to be helped by them. While teledentistry works for many cases, certain teeth may be too crowded or spaced for clear aligners to work successfully. There are general limitations to how much the teledentistry model can achieve. Teeth can be shifted or realigned, but major changes in their alignment will require a more acute style of orthodontics.
Additionally, if you do not have all natural or permanent teeth, you will not be able to use at-home aligners. Replacement teeth in the area that a person wishes to adjust will disqualify them from using aligners. Replacement teeth are designed to fit into the alignment of teeth that exists when they’re put in place. Straightening the teeth will not adjust a permanent replacement.
Finally, it’s important that you are able to comply with the instructions if you choose to use aligners. Anything less than total commitment could end up costing you more in the long run. At-home straightening services like Impressions rely on clear aligners to correct the look of your smile.
They aren’t permanent and are changed often to make small shifts in the shape and alignment of your teeth. Since aligners can be removed to eat and drink anything other than cool water, you as an individual are responsible for ensuring that you put them back in and keep them in place for the right amount of time, at least 22 hours a day.
What’s the Downside?
It is extremely important that you go to a dentist and get a full check-up before using at-home aligners. Once treatment starts, you won’t be spending much time at a dentist’s office, so it’s essential that you cover your bases before correction gets underway. Get advice from your dentist as to whether any oral issues exist that could be exacerbated by the aligners. Unhealthy gums, active tooth decay, or severe issues with bite can all derail your treatment. Any service that provides at-home straightening care will ask for recent x-rays to determine whether or not your teeth are healthy enough for aligners.
